Southbank

A spinoff from the popular series Southpark, Southbank puts the spotlight on 3 relatively unknown characters as they leave the park and enter the professional world. Jeff starts a small design firm on the southbank of Jacksonville and hires Stef and Chris to join him. Expect more of the same antics and hillarity from this bunch as Stephanie mistakenly uses Spraymount for hairspray and Jeff killing Chris with an Xacto knife.

Can Blog gets a new wrapper.

I think we were all tiring of the "canned" blogger template look. With a little research, I found a wonderful template from Gecko and Fly to work from. Note the new logo and color scheme. I hope you'll find this a little more pleasing to the eye.

Enjoy.

Kickin' some Bass

Saul Bass is one of those intangible designers who fills me with a mix of feelings: part inspriation, part pessimisism that I'll never be that great. I've been told that design is the logical answer to a problem; great design makes you say, "Duh, like there was any other way."

Not Coming to a Theater Near You has created a great gallery of Bass' work Titles Designed By Saul Bass. It's not video, just a series of click-through still frames, but it's still a great look at a collection of his movie title work.

To steal from the current Guiness campaign: BRILLIANT!

A Big Impression for a Tiny Lipstick

And now, some design for the girls... from Business Week Online

Bésame Cosmetics has been tripling its annual revenue by focusing on design, craftsmanship, and showpiece packaging inspired by vintage glamour.

Gabriela Hernandez' sense of style has always been informed by the chic elegance of such film stars as Rita Hayworth and Bette Davis. So when Hernandez decided to create her own makeup company, Bésame Cosmetics, it was only natural she would return to Hollywood's golden age of beauty.

A successful art historian and graphic designer, Hernandez had worked on marketing and advertising for a number of companies, including McDonald's (MCD ) and Kodak (EK ), at the Alma Group, the design agency she founded with her husband in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, Calif. However, it was in the midst of projects for major cosmetics brands that she began toying with the idea of creating her own beauty firm. Frustrated with what was available in terms of sophistication, glamour, and quality, Hernandez decided to create a modern line that translated the style and craftsmanship of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s. It was a time when cosmetics were designed to be glamorous and even the packaging was considered an elegantly made showpiece.

Harrington Design Arts Alliance

There are many organizations that bolster and support the arts, but who is there to support said organizations? Often lack of resources (time, money, staff) cause really great work to go unnoticed. Emerging artists and designers laden with talent don't often have the business acumen to develop a name and reputation for themselves. They need mentors and coaches. There are so many issues that affect the art and design community at large and although one more advocacy group is not going to change the world, we should not neglect our circle of influence.

October marks the fith anniversary of Harrington Design Company. And the launch of Harrington Design Arts Alliance.
