Remember this guy from I Love Design 2005?

Michael Vanderbyl Earns Lifetime Achievement Award
by Mairi BeautymanInterior Design -- 3/28/2006

The designer has work in several international museums.

Michael Vanderbyl has 30 years under his belt as principal of his namesake firm, and the accolades are rolling in. The multidisciplinary designer is this year’s recipient of the IIDA Southern California Chapter’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Tonight, March 28, the award will be presented at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, during the 17th Annual IIDA Calibre Awards ceremony.

Tomorrow, Vanderbyl will be the guest of honor at the Teknion showroom in Santa Monica. Furniture manufacturer Teknion and textile manufacturer Luna Textiles will honor Vanderbyl with snacks and cocktails. The designer, who has work in the permanent collections of the Cooper Hewitt Museum (Smithsonian Institution), the Library of Congress, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum Die Neue Sammlung in Munich, established Vanderbyl Design in San Francisco in 1973. The multi-disciplinary firm now offers graphics, packaging, signage, interiors, showrooms, furniture, textiles, and fashion apparel.

The Teknion showroom event kicks off at 5pm. To RSVP, contact Tiana Pardini, Teknion A&D representative at tpardini@tekus.com or 310-902-1162. The showroom is located at 631 Wilshire Blvd., on the 2nd floor.

A slew of design events will occur in Los Angeles this week, coinciding with NeoCon West and L.A.DesignWeek. For more information, visit the Merchandise Mart online.

A little creative reCHARGE ...
[Guest blogger and HOW managing editor Sarah Whitman files this entry]

I just returned from the AIGA/Jacksonville re:CHARGE conference and I feel, well, recharged. It’s funny how two days filled with nice people, great speakers and a cool city will do that to you.

The event was held at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL, the oldest city in the country. It was well-organized and the materials were national-conference caliber, but there was definitely a laidback, college-town vibe to the whole thing, which was fantastic. Attendees were a little more open. Speakers were a little more relaxed. And the theme, “there's a little Creative Monster inside all of us,” actually seemed to work.

In addition to great regional talent like Roger Black, Klaus Heesch from Juicy Temples and Phil Bienert from CitiGroup’s in-house creative department, the chapter scored major national names like Ze Frank, Sean Adams, David Carson and Terry Marks for the speaker roster. (Check out Ze and Terry at the HOW Conference.) AIGA national president Bill Grant stopped by to talk about some of the great new stuff the organization is working on. And everyone from the starry-eyed students to the industry icons seemed to be learning a lot—and having a ball at the parties.

The conference was small—maybe 75 attendees—which was part of what made it such an easygoing event. I think it could (and should) grow a little without killing that vibe, though. Given AIGA/Jacksonville's commitment to bring in great speakers (thanks Russel, Lisa, Jeff and Ron) and create top-notch materials (shout out to the nGEN works crew), I think this event is on track to rival AIGA/San Diego’s Y Design Conference. So whether you’re a Floridian or not, mark your calendars for 2008. This may be the best little conference you didn’t know about.

Business Week launches innovation and design channel

http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/index.html

Business Week has launched a new business channel that looks interesting. There is a nice article on Italian architecture. I'm amazed out how the business community is putting more and more of an emphasis on Design and it's relation to the bottom line.

Good news for designers.
